Quark Publishing System 3.6 Migration Known Issues

Following is a list of issues discovered in the utility for migrating from Quark Publishing System® 1.x/2.x/3.x to QPS® 3.6 or above.

QPS Migration Issues

  • Mac OS® and Windows®: If you use QPS Migration XTensions software with a single—language version of QuarkXPress and your projects include multiple—language QuarkXPress® projects, the process stops to display a message that indicates the project cannot be saved in single—language format.
  • Expected behavior: The migration process should skip the project, continue migrating other files, and indicate the problem in the log file.
  • Mac OS and Windows: If you use a single—language version of MigrationCopyDesk to migrate QuarkCopyDesk® articles, and your assets include multiple—language articles, the software skips the multiple—language articles and continues migrating other articles. The migration log file displays "FAILED Could not Check out Error = 180." The correct text in the log file should be "FAILED Could not Check out Error = This is a multiple language article and can only be opened in QuarkCopyDesk Passport."
  • Mac OS and Windows: When MigrationCopyDesk encounters an article with a bad file format during the migration process, the software skips the article and continues migrating other articles. The migration log file displays "FAILED Could not Check out Error = 47." The correct error text in the log file should be "FAILED Could not Check out Error = Bad File format."
  • Mac OS and Windows: If the migration utilities encounter any corrupted assets in your file repository, the assets will not be migrated.
  • Workaround: Using QuarkDispatch® Manager, choose QuarkDispatch > Recover Damaged Files before you start the migration process. You can determine whether you have any corrupt assets and recover them, if possible.
  • Mac OS and Windows: No progress bar displays during the migration process for picture files and "other" files.
  • Workaround: When the migration process for picture files completes, the following message displays: "Completed migration of Pictures. Please see ‘MigrationPictures.txt’ for details." Wait until the message displays. When you choose Utilities > Migrate Other Files, the message at the end of the process displays as follows: "Completed migration of Other files. Please see ‘MigrationOtherFiles.txt’ for details."
  • Mac OS and Windows: The log files for QuarkCopyDesk article migrations display extra characters after the time and date reported for the beginning and end of the migration process.
  • Mac OS and Windows: The MigrationCopyDesk application file is not compatible with QuarkCopyDesk 3.6.1.
  • Recommendations:
    • Install QuarkCopyDesk 3.6 and follow the instructions in the Migrating to Quark Publishing System Classic 3.6.1 document to replace the QuarkCopyDesk application file with the MigrationCopyDesk application file.
    • Do not upgrade your copy of QuarkCopyDesk 3.6 to QuarkCopyDesk 3.6.1 on the machine on which you plan to run your QuarkCopyDesk article migration. If you use the same computer for MigrationCopyDesk and QuarkCopyDesk 3.6.1, create a folder called "Preferences" in the QuarkCopyDesk 3.6.1 application folder, and then create another folder called "Preferences" in the MigrationCopyDesk application folder. When you launch a particular version of QuarkCopyDesk, it will create a preferences file in the folder called "Preferences."
  • Mac OS and Windows: The migration commands in the Utilities menu in QuarkCopyDesk and QuarkXPress only display in U.S. English and International English.
  • Workaround: If you’re using QuarkXPress Passport and QuarkCopyDesk Passport, before you initiate the migration process, choose Edit > Program Language > U.S. English or International English. The migration commands in the Utilities menu work for all files, but the commands only display in U.S. English or International English.
  • Mac OS and Windows: Microsoft® Word files created in QPS 1.x are skipped automatically during the migration process, and the migration log file does not completely explain the reason for the failed migrations. The log text is, "FAILED Could not Check out Error = 32767." But the log text should be, “FAILED Could not Check out Error = Cannot migrate Word files from QPS 1.x.”
  • Intel® based Mac OS and Windows: QuarkXPress may unexpectedly quit during the migration process.
  • Recommendation for Mac OS: Perform the migration process on a Power Mac® computer instead of an Intel Mac.
  • Recommendation: If QuarkXPress unexpectedly quits, relaunch the application and initiate the migration process again. The process will resume from the point of failure and finish migrating files.
  • Mac OS and Windows: If a QuarkXPress project includes imported pictures that are missing or modified, the migration process stops to display a message that prompts the user to find or update the picture. You do not need to update the missing or modified files; the process should continue automatically.

QPS Server and Console Issues

  • Mac OS only: The QPS Server console does not display on certain Mac OS computers.
  • Workaround: Enter the correct machine name and IP address in the "/etc/hosts" file.
